Filmscreening & Presentation: Hesitation Wound with Brett Wilson, 13.11.2024, 19:30

The Man Who Just Left the Cinema: M. Brett Wilson

Director: Selman Nacar / 84 min / Turkey, France, Spain, Romania / 2023 / Turkish with English Subtitles

Hesitation Wound is the story of a lawyer who is forced to confront herself while defending a murder suspect. Canan is an idealistic defence lawyer. During the day she rushes from case to case, at night she is in hospital with her mother, who is on a ventilator. When the day comes for the final hearing in a murder case she has been working on for a long time, Canan finds herself in a difficult situation. Canan has to make a moral decision that will affect the lives of her mother, the judge and the defendant.

The film uses a murder case to question whether the justice system is the same for everyone. It also shows the conflict between what is legally right and what is personally ethical, and how a lawyer is torn between her conscience and the legal system she firmly believes in. The film encourages us to reflect on the justice system, which is not independent of social and economic power relations, and on the concepts of crime, punishment and ethics.

After the film, historian M. Brett Wilson will give a speech as the person who just left the cinema.

M. Brett Wilson is Associate Professor of History and Public Policy. He researches and teaches in the fields of religious, intellectual and cultural history, specialising in the context of the late Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey.
